Chicco KeyFit 30 (Best Infant Car Seat For Tesla Model S)

best car seats for tesla model S
  • Car seat dimensions: D27.5″ x W16.5″ x H24″
  • Carrier weight: 9.5 lbs (Base – 7 lbs)
  • Orientation: Rear-facing (4 – 30 lbs)

The Chicco Keyfit 30 measures only 16.5 inches side by side which makes it perfect for the tiny backseat of the Tesla Model S.

This car seat is also compact front to back and will fit nicely in the outboard seats leaving enough legroom for a 6-foot passenger or driver.

The Keyfit 30 is suitable for newborns from 4 to 30 pounds. And, the seat provides a base that’s easy to install providing a safe ride for your little one. The seat does its job only when it’s installed properly.

This option however isn’t ideal for frequent travelers. The Keyfit 30 is considered on the heavy side when compared to other infant car seats on the market.

What we love

  • Suitable for small babies & preemies
  • Good value for money
  • Easy to install and use

What can be improved

  • Small canopy
  • Only the American seatbelt fastening is possible without the base

Graco SlimFit3 LX (Best Slim Car Seat For Tesla Model S)

  • Car seat dimensions: D20.7” x W16.7” x H24.5”
  • Car seat weight:19.2 lbs
  • Car seat orientation: Rea-facing (5-40 lbs), Forward facing (22-65 lbs), HBB (40-100 lbs)

While the Tesla Model S cannot safely accommodate 3 car seats in the back seat, but it’s always a good idea to go for a car seat that can save you hip room space in the Tesla.

The Slimfit3 LX is a super slim convertible seat, especially when you have another bulky car seat to go in the backseat already.

This car seat is only 16.7 inches wide and can be installed in the outboard positions using LATCH or in the middle seat using a seatbelt.

When rear-facing, the Graco Slimfit3 LX is relatively compact front-to-back, but taller drivers or passengers may still find their legs cramped in the Tesla Model S. If that’s the case, you can move this car seat to the middle position when rear-facing.

What we love

  • Skinny profile
  • Wide belt paths that make installation easier
  • Steel reinforced frame
  • Optional cup holders

What can be improved

  • Seat LATCH is somewhat difficult to remove from the storage area
  • Seat belt lockoff for forward-facing use only (No rear-facing lockoff)

Graco Extend2Fit (Best Convertible Car Seat for Extended Rear-facing in Tesla Model S)

best car seat for tesla model s extend2fit
  • Car seat dimensions: D21.5” x W19.5” x H23.5”
  • Car seat weight:19 lbs
  • Car seat orientation: Rea-facing (4-50 lbs), Forward facing (22-65 lbs)

The Garco Extend2fit car seat is highly recommended for parents that want to rear-face their little ones as long as possible. With a rear-facing weight limit of 50 pounds, the Garco Extend2fit allows for extended use in the rear-facing position, providing optimal safety for babies.

In addition to the extended rear-facing advantage, the Extend2fit is one of the most compact car seats front-to-back allowing it to save space in the Tesla Model S when rear-facing.

We also like the 4-position extension panel the Extend2fit provides for additional legroom for growing children.

However, when the extension panel is used, the car seat may not fit well behind the driver or passenger seats when rear-facing in a Tesla Model S.

Overall the Graco Extend2fit is a well-built car seat that’s easy to install, compact, and a lot more for a moderate price.

If you’re a fan of the Garco Extend2fit convertible car seat but you wish it could convert into a high-back booster, you’ll be happy to know that Garco offers an alternative version called the Extend2fit 3-in-1 car seat and it does just that.

Like the original Extend2fit car seat, the 3-in-1 version features an extension panel for additional legroom, multiple recline positions, and an easy-to-adjust harness system.

What we love

  • Compact front to back
  • Extended rear-facing
  • Extention panel for legroom space
  • Available in Canada

What can be improved

  • Cupholders must be attached
  • Takes more space front-to-back when the extension panel is used

Peg Perego Viaggio Flex (Best Booster Car Seat For Tesla Model S)

best booster car seat for Tesla Model S
  • Car seat dimensions: 22″ x 17.25″ x 26.75″
  • Car seat weight:14 lbs
  • Car seat orientation: Forward facing HHB (40-120 lbs)

Finding a booster seat that sits well in Tesla cars and does not cover the seat buckles is hard.

One of the very few booster seats that are suitable for the Tesla Model S and other Tesla models is the Peg Perego Viaggio Flex 120.

The booster seat is super narrow and does not feature armrests which makes it possible for the little ones to buckle and unbuckle the seatbelt without help.

Unlike other booster seats, the Viaggio Flex booster has an adjustable headrest. And with the Tesla’s inconvenient headrests, the Peg Perego headrest can be adjusted to sit

Safety and ease of installation are also excellent. The Viaggio Flex connects easily to the Tesla Model S using a rigid LATCH system that secures it, so it isn’t floating loose when not in use.

The icing on the cake is that this booster can fold in half and becomes a small package that’s easy to store or travel with.

What we love

  • Folded cup holders
  • Adjustable headrests
  • Recline positions
  • LATCH system

What can be improved

  • High price

Cosco Topside (Best Backless Car Seat for Tesla Model S)

best car seat for tesla model s backless booster
  • Car seat dimensions: D16″ x W15″ x H3″
  • Car seat weight: 2.2 lbs
  • Car seat orientation: forward-facing backless booster(40–100 lbs)

The main issue with many booster seats is that are too wide for small cars and they tend to cover the seat buckle forcing you to use a belt extender which we do not recommend.

However, the Cosco Topside backless booster seat footprint is small enough to rest well within the backseat of the Tesla Model S. Also, the seat buckles and be easily accessed by the child.

The Cosco is super lightweight and you can use it in multiple cars. The padding is not the best but it does the job for short daily trips.

Another drawback of the Cosco Topside booster seat is the lack of LATCH anchors. LATCH anchors can keep the booster in place, preventing it from sliding around.

But this is understandable given the seat’s appealing price.

What we love

  • Fits well and does not cover the seat buckle
  • Very lightweight to use as a travel booster

What can be improved

  • No LATCH attachments to secure it down
  • Minimal padding (not so good for long trips)

FAQs

Can a Tesla Model S accommodate 3 car seats?

Unfortunately, it’s not recommended to have 3 car seats in the Tesla Model S. The back seat of the Tesla Model S measures 50.3 inches in hip room, which means that the maximum width for each car seat should be around 16.76 inches (50.3 divided by 3).

While some car seats may fit within this size constraint, there may be overlap between the 3 car seats. This overlap can create safety issues and is not recommended by all manufacturers. Therefore, 3 seats across in the Tesla Model S is not recommended.
